It has been several months in the making but I have released the new User Interface (UX). If you can please take a moment and review the site, let me know if you see any display errors or suggestions for improvements.
The site looks best on Firefox and Chrome. IE has a few quirks that need to be worked through but IE 9 is the best, IE 8 is acceptable, IE 7 well... doesn't support a lot of features within the new UX design. I'm a small shop and given time constraints the new UX is pointing towards an HTML 5 future.
NEW FEATURES:
Box Scores, Play By Play are redesigned. The layout is now much easier to read and understand/follow along. This also required a slight upgrade to the Sim. The new PBP Scorecard Gpx are cumulative of where the game stands at the END of the player's at bat.
NOTE: I noticed some flaws in the Sim after the PBP redesign. All I can say for now is I have made a Sim upgrade a priority.
Private Leagues:Setting up Private Leagues should be easier. There is a new check box system alerting the manager when a minimum number of teams have been invited to create a PL. Browsers must have Javascript active for this feature to work. But managers can't book the league unless a min number of teams are invited.
NOTE: The PL standings page lets managers click back and forth between the VS, Team Hitting, Team Pitching stats. I will convert the Main League Standings to this format soon. This gives a snapper feel and doesn't require the page to keep going back to the server for info.
Bug Fix: No longer will more than 8 teams be allowed to join a PL. And "Join League disappears when the league schedule is created.
Dropdown Menus: Most pages have been re-organized in new menus. This should make navigation easier. Some main pages such as the old GM, Clubhouse pages were eliminated. They were just composite pages of other info. The main goal was to reduce clicks to get to popular pages.
Guides: They have a place holder but I have not started converting them to the new layout.
Team Vitals/Assets: The right side of the page is now dedicated to the Team that is being viewed. The Czar picture in the corner will soon be replaced by a team's avatar, it currently a place holder. Team avatars will be hosted by a site called Gravatar. The Vitals/Assets will change depending the team that is being viewed.
Team Content: The left side is team content, stats, player info, standings etc. There are some pages that need a bit more work, but overall there is a lot of improvement here.
Next:I am starting work on upgrading "Set Lineup", "Set Rotation" pages. The plan is to create a drag and drop interface that actively checks the lineup/rotation for missing players.
Future: Karma. I hope sometime next season to implement Karma. I'll only say Karma will help you in the long run and require a commitment to acquire. Read more about actual Karma HERE
The Farm: You will be able to expand your franchise either by outright owning more teams, or negotiating working agreements with other Manager's to loan players to train and build Karma.
Forums: It speaks for itself. But It is currently a place holder as I decide how and when to implement them.
Friends: Coming soon a feature of Facebook, and Google Plus. Yes I have been saying it but I am serious now.
Spread the word of Baseballczar: We need more players, tell your friends about us, have them join the fun.
Thanks
RG

Baseballczar Site Problem
Sorry about this. I messed starting Season 4. I put in the incorrect date when making the teams schedules. This made all the games play out on their own. I have fixed it, restarted the season correctly and today's games should go off without a hitch.
Please remember to set your lineups, and double check them. I know my it can be difficult to set them but relief is on the way.
Also I am out of the country for about 10 days. I will have limited access to email and the site, at times I will no access. Please be patient with any problems that occur.
Thanks

Season 4 is Here! News about Baseballczar's Status.
First thanks to the Pikes Peak Rum Runners as the Baseballczar 03 World Series Champions! This season’s post season offered an exciting and in some places extraordinary games.
I wanted to outline a few items that are important for the near and long term.
Lineups: RFA moves and newly aquired players are not autoplaced into your lineup. Games will be delayed if lineups are not set.
Long Term:
I am still working on a new User Interface. There is a demo of the page essentially for looking, but not navigating, at the end of this blog is a link to the demo. I feel it is a vast improvement over our current UI layout. Please take a look and let me know what you think. I had planned to release this by July, which brings me to my next item.
My full time job is with a national news organization. This week I am going to Afghanistan for about two weeks on assignment. I will have very limited access to Baseballczar for that period of time. So please be patient with any problems the site has. I can’t guarantee I will be able to address issues as they arise or answer emails. I will send a tweet out when the our air date comes up in late July. This will also force the new UI into late July/early August
That said:
Please make sure the lineups, rotations and bullpens are not missing players. If it is games will not get played. If your game did not get played check your lineup, rotation and bullpen for a missing player. In the last month 100% of games not being played were from missing players in a team’s lineup, rotation or bullpen.
Upcoming Season 4:
The focus is on continuing work on the UI, and updating outdated pages. Currently I'm working on an over haul of the Private Leagues.
New Features of the UI in development:
Drop down menus
Team Avatars via Gravatar.com
New easier to read layout.
New features in development:
Inviting Friends, - To make Baseballczar better we need more players. We will make it easy to invite friends to play along. Of course you can always just invite your friends anyways.
New Lineup/Pitching Roster Page - Making it easier to set the lineups.
Training Page - A much needed upgrade to the player training interface.
Farm System - Want to develop players faster? Send them to the farm, create working agreements with other managers to swap players to increase their skills.
Karma - Players will use the Karma created by your participation in Baseballczar. Karma will be an asset your team uses to create a better team.
Any questions just shootem my way.
See you on the field.

RFA SHUT DOWN-UPDATE
All good RFA is back up and running.
I had to shut down the offers because the offers were being immediately accepted. I know what the problem is I just need to work through the code and fix it. I will update this ASAP. Though the players will still take offers ALL RFA OFFERS WILL BE RESET, once I fix the bug.
Thanks for your patience,
RG

Monday is Free Agent Week
Just a reminder Monday starts free agent week or your opportunity to sign any Restricted Free Agent with 0 years on his contract. All RFA's can be viewed in advance here if you are signed in. RFA LIST
Not sure what an RFA is? Click Here
Players not on a manager's team cannot be fully viewed until the start of RFA week Monday at Midnight EDT. But you can get a sense of who is out there.
Changes from last season:
RFA signing period will be open from Midnight June 20 - 11:59pm June 25 EDT.
Players will take offers all week. Last season a player would decide after 3 days.
Newly signed RFA's will appear on your roster day 1 of the next season June 27, first game season 4 is June 29.
RFA players not receiving an offer from any team, including their own, are auto signed to their current team by the Sim to a 1 year contract with roughly a 15% pay raise. Managers that do not want a player can release him after the start of the next season with no penalty.
I did this because last season only about 15% of all RFA's got an offer. Which would have given the league 800 Free Agents and a massive amount lineups to fill by either the Sim or Managers themselves. This also gives everyone a chance to manage team personnel given the quick turnaround of the season.

There was a hiccup in the Sim that has delayed games from being played. The problem is now resolved. 3rd Round Games Should be booked ASAP.

Season 3 Post Season first round upsets!
As we descend into post season play the first round came off with a major upset. The Defending World Series Champions and #1 seed Oaklawn Warrior were upset by the NY Spartans. Though not completely surprising the NY Spartans came in second place in MLB this season and have been with Baseballczar since nearly the beginning.
Check out the Round 1 results and Round 2 Match ups in the playoff link in the sidebar.
A quick note about round 2. Group 33 should be Iowa Corn Growers v The Bat Crushers. The Sim added the incorrect team name to the match up and should be corrected by tonight.
Round 2 starts June 16th at Noon.

Post Season-Thanks-New-Interface-Update
So I just realized I've been a little off the radar as of late. With the post season and Season 4 fast approaching I have been working on a new design and concept for Baseballczar.
The first part rolls out in July with a new UI (user interface).
Check it out here == > BBZ UI Concept Page<==
New UI Features:
Most all Manager tools will be available via a dropdown menu. The goal is to give managers no more than 2 clicks to get to all parts of the site. Also each page should have 2 ways to nav to it, ie lineups and rotations.
The GM, Clubhouse, and Owner pages will be removed, though the dropdown will still use these as menu headings. These pages essentially provided interim snapshots of each of the sub pages available. Removing these pages is sort of a no brainer. I feel this approach should make nav much quicker and direct given the new drop downs menus.
The Site Guides are all being moved to the drop down link.
The Team Data will move to the left side, with the right side containing a "Team Box" with Team Vitals, Team History, and Team Assets.
The Team Box will change depending on which team is being viewed. This will provide a better snapshot of deals your team has been working and other public team data. We will add Icons that will notify managers to invites for Private Leagues, Sandlot Games, and Transactions.
Best of all the Team Box will have a spot for a Team Logo or Picture. Gravatar.com provides the server backbone for this feature. Managers will need to sign up for a Gravatar account separate from Baseballczar but you will be able to manage those images outside our site and use them wherever Gravatar is supported. Check out Gravatar.com for more info.
On the Team Data side ie Standings, Scoreboard, Schedule will be have improved navagation and layouts.
Changes to Features:
Head to Head Games become Sandlot Games. To challenge a team Managers will have to nav to the team's home page and click the Sandlot Icon. There will be a new larger icon to notify teams of invites to this.
Private Leagues will be updated to make invites easier to deal with. The current system is a little clumsy and incomplete. One update will allow managers to create "Open Leagues" to allow any manager to join regardless of invite.
Set Game Roster. I am working on a quick set roster that will allow managers to change the lineup or rotation or bullpen with available players. Adding new players to the game rosters will still require a the other set lineup page.
New Features
These will be implemented over the summer, with a target for season 5.
"THE FARM"
Build your own minor league system via working agreements with other Teams. The complete system has not been finalized. The concept allows players to be loaned out on either a options system, similar to the MLB's 40 Man Roster or Season to Season Loan similar to loan system in European Soccer.
"FRIENDS"
Yes you will be able to make friends in Baseballczar. The final system has not been set yet but it will integrate with other site features.
"FORUMS"
We will set up a public BBZ Forum for all of us to participate in the dialogue of Baseball. We are currently looking for a vendor for this feature that will integrate with our registration system.
"KARMA"
Give a little get a little. The more a manager participates in baseballczar the higher the Karma. Your players feed off of your interest in them and the site.
"Facebook"
Add Facebook Connect to allow you to log in with your fb userID and password. Registration will still need to be done through Baseballczar then connect to facebook.
Any questions just shoot'em my way.

Post Season 3 - Games Booked!
We just finished booking the first round of the Post Season 3! Check out your team's group and games. If you didn't qualify don't fret Season 4 is right around the corner.
First to qualify:
Division Winners: divisions MLB - R, Managed Teams only.
Next to qualify:
Next Highest Ranked Teams: Based on League Rankings.
These are teams that did not win their regular season division.
Explained:
How a team qualifies can flux a little. For example the Sim removes absent managers (Managers not logged in in the past 4 weeks) before booking the playoffs, this could create a division of all sim teams and no division winner. In this senario more ranked teams will qualify until the field of 64 is filled. Good luck!
JUNE 13 FIRST ROUND GAMES BOOKED (Booked a little early)
Managers can view first round match-ups.
Tuesday June 14 FIRST ROUND KICKS OFF 12 Noon
Games will be booked for the next round after midnight of that day's games.
All rounds play approx every other day, except Semi-Finals and World Series, they both play back to back.
Midnight EDT
JUNE 20 - 11:59 EDT pm JUNE 25 FREE AGENT WEEK
This is where teams can make Free Agent contract offers to any player with an expiring contract. See Guide for more details
JUNE 27 SEASON 4 STARTS
RFA and Draftees appear on Roster.
Players age, contracts advance 1 year.
JUNE 29 First Game Season 4!
Additional Note:
Baseballczar keeps growing, as we grow the Division pyramid will grow. At the end of this season we will promote a lot of teams up that otherwise would not qualify for a higher division. This makes room in the Rookie Ball for new managers. Spread the word, everyone is welcome.

Inspired to Run
A departure from the baseballsim part of the blog:
On my run Tuesday in Central Park, I ran 5 miles. It was a good run by my standards. Walked twice, small walks to let out a little pain in my back and burning thighs. 5 miles is a lot, that is most don't run that much at least not for their normal run. Almost 15 miles in 5 days.
It takes me about a hour to do the 103rd street loop(as I call it). It starts out at Columbus Circle, near work, heads east Central Park Drive, past Hecksher Playground my daughters love to go, then turns north after 7th Ave, winding past the Sheep Meadow, Amphitheater, The Boat House, Cat Hill, and past The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art) to the Jackie O reservoir where Fred LeBow made running famous. At that point all the tourists are gone, and its just runners on a wet Tuesday.
Runs like this are hard with only the committed on the road pounding away the miles. I see 3 people coming at me running the bike lane. Clearly two women and a man. But the man has limp, severe limp. Dressed in a blue running suit, he's launching upwards on his left foot giving his right foot enough time to move forward. He repeats the process, at best, an awkward gait, contrasted by his smooth stride running partners.
At a 100 feet I notice he has no left foot, a prosthetic. The pants of the suit cover his legs enough so its visibly unnoticeable unless you look at his shoes. He was an inspiration. He has blond hair and relatively young, about my age. I get closer and I give him a thumbs up, he returns it. I imagine as runners go he gets that a lot, if not he should.
15 minutes later I cross another running pair on the West Drive next to the reservoir heading uphill, right before the stoplight. One man is dragging a foot on each stride. His running buddy is obviously very fit and talking a lot. A little of what I could hear was encouragement, coaching and reassuring. The nature of this runner's injury is less apparent. But he's struggling with a paralysis on his right side. His arm is curled a bit like my step father who suffered a stroke in 1999. He too is relatively young. But inspirational.
Maybe the similar age, the running or his injury, probably his injury but it really affected me emotionally. I choked up, eyes welled, my head started to throb. I wonder what it takes him to get to that particular point in his day: Running uphill on a misty wet Tuesday.
I pushed through my last mile and a half determined not to stop. Running has this positive effect on me. Watching everyday people move through life and tackle a task that isn't just a daily run but a monumental achievement. To finish is to live and confirm it with a check!
With running I try to take a selfless position. I want to give more than I get. Sharing the success I've personally found running a 9:30 mile, in a loop in central park is one way. At finish lines I double back to cheer, we owe it to other runners. I really believe cheering helps. That it provides strength to others in the last quarter mile of the race and reassure them the race officials are not moving the finish further down the road (I swear they do). The point is in running everyone can find and be an inspiration.

New Landing Page
As part of an overall site redesign we have launched a new landing page. Special thanks to our designer Jessica Greenwalt. I am still getting some of the parts together but I'm very happy its up, and I feel, is a major improvement.
Also the new server is up and running. We should see a big bump in stability and response time. We were on a very old server which needed to go.
Enjoy!

New Sever On the Way!
UPDATE:
Finsihed.
Baseballczar has experienced a lot of delayed games, trades and hiccups over the last few weeks. Today I ordered a new server that should alleviate the problems we've all been experiencing. My plan is to have it up and running by the end of this week. This may mean some down time on the site as we migrate over to the new server, but I'll try to minimize it as much as possible.
Overall my issue is too many background programs for the current server. This is also an older server beyond its expected life use, moving to a new server was inevitable. Over the last month I worked on automation of the site which will free up a lot of time for redevelopment of the game overall, and the sim (which needs it). There is also a new landing page on the way after we are moved to the new server.
Any questions just send them my way,
Thanks
RG

Games Delayed May 8 Update
Saturday some league games were played, some were not. I've been having some server issues that are more related to the Sim itself shutting down unexpectedly. This week I am expanding the existing server and this should solve the problem.
Thanks for playing.

Reminder RFA Trade/Release
Four days left in week 7. Managers wishing to rid themselves of Restricted Free Agents, players with 0 years in their contract, must release or put the player on the trade wire by this Sunday May 8th. On Monday any unwanted RFA's will stay on your roster for the remainder of the season, the Trade/Release option will be removed from those players.
For advice on posting players on the trade wire refer to this blog:

Games Delayed April 30, 2011
Saturday's games were delayed with a server issue. I am working on resolving the issue permanently, I am hopeful the problem will be resolved by next weekend.
Thanks for your patience,

Player Trades and Values and Your Suggestions
I wanted to write a little bit on player values vs trades. One of the great things I've seen recently are managers using the trade wire to move players off their rosters and to acquire players, rather than using only the UFA system. I know this trend is, in part, a limitation of UFA signings per season, per team currently 2.
Player values are formuled by individual skills and age. The per ball value is a secret, but generally each skill has a different weighted measure. Skills used more to create a player's performance have a greater influence on the Player Value. The younger the player (the more potential for development) the greater the player's value.
More importantly, a player's value is the basis for: SALARY. An 18 year old valued at 150k makes about 1500 per week, but that player could be in the 500k range, and demanding 5000 per week.
The Player's Value should be a guideline, not final judgement of the player's worth. As such the better way to approach selling or buying a player is to start with a lower initial offer. Managers buying a player obviously cannot bid lower than the initial asking price. But by not bidding tells the selling manager the offer is too high.
I've seen some players with low core skills (AVG, POWER, EYE) and (FB, CB, Control) go for some large trade prices. I think the bids were based on the player's value rather than their worth. It may also be there is a lot more money floating around BBZ than just a month ago so price is negligible. This also means inflation! Just some food for thought.
I'm looking for suggestions to improve the balance of trades and UFA signings. There are probably 100 ways to change it, but I need to hear from the managers as a whole to get a clear idea for a direction to go. Your thoughts can be posted here.

Delayed Games, Player Transactions and Your Help
Games were delayed for about half of the Baseballczar teams Thursday. This affected R.II to R.XVI. Friday a manager alerted me to the delay. But what I found as the problem, has lead to a good discussion about improving how managers can develop a team. For that I started a discussion on Facebook. The rest of the blog concerns the game delay.
NOTE: Fielder/Hitters Game Roster must have 15 players (9 Man Lineup/6 on the Bench).
Pitching Game Roster 10 players. (5 starters/5 Bullpen).
The Event:
When the Sim starts to play a game it gathers all the resources, ie team lineups, rotations. One of the first things it parses is the data showing "Who" the starting pitchers are for a specific game. The Sim's very next step is to update that data to indicate the NEXT starting pitcher for the next game.
If some of the resources are missing the Sim goes into a loop waiting for the resources: In this case one player missing from a game roster. So every time the Sim would pull the starting pitcher it would update the next game's starting pitcher, and try to load the fielder/hitter game roster. When it saw a hitter was missing the Sim would go back into the loop and try to restart the game, repeatedly loading and updating the starting pitcher for the next game.
In the browser this would appear as the "Next" star
jumping around from one pitcher to the next. As a manager would be looking at the pitching roster the Sim is literally trying to run the game and resetting the starting pitcher over and over again.
What happened?
The bug here is the game lineups and rosters, this includes the bench and bullpen. If a manager releases or trades a player on the game roster and does not replace that player on the roster the Sim will go into a loop as described above. This will happen whether there is a missing pitcher or batter. I will admit I knew this could be a problem as I knew of the bug. Overall it hasn't been a problem but with more managers playing I'm making this the priority for further development.
The Fix:
Initially I will change the "release" and "trade" functions to prevent players from being put in a position to vacate a game roster spot. When a manager releases a player the Sim will check the given game roster to check if it is affected by the player move. Trades are trickier because a player can be on the trade wire, but possibly not traded. Moving the player off a game roster until the trade is done doesn't make sense. The Sim will message managers before allowing roster moves that affect the game. To kill 2 birds with one stone my idea was to require teams to have +1 player to make roster moves.
+ 1 Concept:
Require Fielder/Hitters Game Rosters to have 15 + 1 to make a roster move, Pitching Game Rosters 10 + 1. This would only be required if the team wanted to make at least 1 player roster move. Managers would then just need to swap the player out, or have the Sim put the player in the game roster spot automatically.
On Facebook:
A manager I discussed this with pointed out the limitations of 2 UFA's per season in trying to keep the roster legal. So I'm asking managers to comment either on this blog or at facebook. FB Discussion
How can we better balance UFA, RFA Trades and player development to give managers more team development options?

New Players Names!!
Ok this is less dramatic than adding a date to the training page(see "Dates Are Here"). Due to more back ground updates managers will see less repetitive player names starting at Rookie XXII and higher, and also with the two 18 year old rookies signed to each team at the start of the new season. As time goes on newly named players will be at every corner of Baseballczar.
Background on the names
When I started developing and creating players I used a short table of 36 names. Literally I would randomly pull a first name and last name, smack them together and voila! Instant player. So many of the names are pulled from friends and family, with no intent to actually say that player is this person. But it did make for a very repetitive name frequency and sometimes funny combinations, at least to me.
New Name Table
With the help of the US Census, I pulled the most common 1200 US Men's first names, then the 1200 most common last names...mine was not among them! I did not alter the list or omit any names just took 1 to 1200. This combination provides 1.48 million unique names and I hope we run through all of them.
To use all the names, Baseballczar would have to grow to 37149 teams divided into 6191 leagues if we stay with 40 man teams and 6 team divisions.
Thanks
RG

DATES ARE HERE!!!
So I've been working on some background tasks the sim carries out. One of those is regulating when players train. Since I updated the training part we can now see WHEN the players actually trained!! I know this is too exciting for everyone to contain themselves. Feel free to facebook us, or tweet about it.
All kidding aside this does finally put player training in context each day. I promise a better training system is on the way, until now I hope this helps.
Tips about Player Training:
1) Players are night owls and train at 4a EDT/1aPDT.
2) Players train every day, no days off.
3) It takes any where from 20 to 50 training days for a player to move one ball in skill.
4) Players can have "half balls. ie a player with a 6 in a Speed could be 5.9 to 6 + on the skill scale. You, as the manager, only get the whole number.
5) Players older than 29 no longer improve in any skill
6) If a player has a "---" on the Set Training Page, it means they are not set to train in any skill.
7) If the player is below the "no improvement" line, it means the player is maxed in a skill or not set to train in any skill
8) ALL players can improve to 4 in each skill, No Player can be better than a 10
9) Players Max Skill is secret, most players are not 9 or 10.
Good Luck!

New Team Account Balences Starting
Starting Sunday April 3, 2011 team expenses will be calculated and taken out at midnight. Additionally all teams will now receive weekly sponsorship money based on their current Division, this is new money with Game Receipts.
We are trying to make revenue important part of BBZ. Bankruptcy is also in the future, this is step towards that.
The breakdown is below:
MLB $50,000
AAA $45,000
AA $40,000
A $35,000
R $30,000
Thanks

Delayed Games 3/31 *update
** Update. Fixes Season 3 League Player Stats. Check out pitchers and hitters stats. Thanks!
Well if you too are just thrilled the boys of summer have made their return then you might have missed checking your team. Which is Ok for the next day or so. Tonight I did a small update on the Sim to fix player stats not being recorded.
The Problem
Pretty much this stems from my misunderstanding of database management and design of 2 years ago. When I set out creating the Baseballczar db structure I put too much info into the player db. Later I realized I could easily separate out player stats, thus reducing load on the server (I did this prior to season 2). However much of the work was ad hoc and I missed a key item in the Sim that created new seasonal player stat records. Some players did not get Season 3 records started or had Season 2 written over because of this problem. I believe this is now fixed as of this sim update.
The Next Problem
Some Season 3 records will not be accurate. It seems that some player records covering half the teams in BBZ are affected. I know my team, The Flying Zoies, has missing Season 3 stats for all my pitchers, though after the update today the pitchers did have new stat records as I expected. Hopefully this will not happen again.
Solution Stats
Friday I will run a fix to update all the Season 3 records for all the players. Player career stats and box scores are separate entities but I can grab the box scores and put together Season 3 for each player. Unfortunately I cannot rebuild Season 2 stats.
Pitchicons
These are the little smiley faces next to each pitcher. Some are were grossly inaccurate. The Sim handles the pitchers based on the last 4 League games. As far as I can tell relievers are being used correctly. I did an update to the app that handles the pitichicon and it should be accurate now.
Keep in mind if a pitcher has low innings, but the Pitchicon "Bad", it is because pitchicons are based on the last 4 games, not total season stats.
Other Notes
I am trying to get some of these smaller buggy items out of the way Friday, like the site displaying week 8 when it is in fact week 2. If there are any seemingly small problems please shoot me an email or post them here via a comment. I will get to them soon.
Thanks again for playing,
RG

Round 2/3 Wins Loss UPDATE
NEXT UPDATE!
I rolled back games 2 and 3 for everyone, I also tried to address a player stat problem. Thanks to all the managers that let me know about the problem. I was working late Friday and didn't have a chance to check in on the site. I put a lot of hours in Saturday/Sunday. Any ways let me know if you see any problems, I think I addressed most of it. There is a stats problem with pitchers. For some reason some not all pitchers are not getting all their stats compiled. Those stats are on another table, so I'm trying to figure out the problem.
Private Leagues will not be rolled back. The leagues are more important overall, and were a ton of work so the PL will have to remain as is.
Remember to manage as if you can't go bankrupt! Or can go bankrupt.
UPDATE
So. I found the problem affected half of Round 2 League Games and Round 3.
We are going to replay all of round 2 and 3. There is not an easy way to separate out the stats and the games affected. I think the problem was a one time event because of the duplicate Sim running. Saturday's games will be delayed until I have the rounds rolled back to day round 1.
Again thanks for every one's understanding. I'm working on this as fast as possible.
Explanation of Problem
Essentially I had two versions of the Sim running at the same time. Usually I have a way of knowing the Sim is running, but when I did some work the other night I never actually shut the Sim down, most likely I minimized it rather than shutting it down.
Then thinking the Sim was running I started a second version, this all happened about 6:20pm Thursday which would also explain why half of Thursday's League games were affected, but no private leagues on Thursday. The Sim started each game twice at the exact same time, the game finishing first would be the game of record on the schedule but both games would be credited based on the result. Arrrr. Frustration.
Thanks

Finally got Season 3 prepped
Play Ball!
Thanks for everyone's patience in waiting for Season 3. In case you haven't heard I am a one man operation. I had hoped to have the site up and ready Monday March 21 in the AM, but ran into some technical problems with promotions, demotions. In the end I modified a lot of code, code I had worked on months earlier and thought I hit it right then. But I think the work accomplished will make the end of Season 3 easier to deal with.
Season 3 changes:
RFA's are designed to provide a lot of bidding excitement. However few managers actually used the RFA signing period (Free Agent Week) to build their teams. As a result I had the Sim resign RFA players to 1 year contracts at a higher per week salary than normal. Managers can release the players or trade them as needed, though like all RFA players after Week 7, they are stuck on your team until the end of the season.
I made this decision because had there been a wholesale release of 960 of 7141 players, roughly 1 of every 7, I foresaw a major problem with team lineups/rotations/bullpens. This reality I had not considered when designing the RFA part of BBZ. Ultimately managers should run their teams as they see fit, not how I envision. So RFA's are just another tool to add to your team, or to make a play for a great player.
From Season 3 forth any player that does not receive a contract offer will re-sign with his current team. The salary is calculated at 1.2% of the players listed value for season, call it a Sim Union rule.
Example:
Player value: $489,000
Week salary: $5,868
Contract: 1 Season
This contract is more expensive than if a manager signed the player but I feel long term this is a good route to go. If I had allowed the all those players onto the market many teams would not have a lineup come opening day Wednesday.
More RFA
I made a mistake coding the RFA contract offer end dates. That is the time the last offer from a team will be accepted by a player. I tried to make RFA's work like a trade or UFA, but really it was a mistake on my part. This caused players to be resigned and moved to new teams, out of lineups etc a real mess.
Starting in Season 3 RFA contract offers will last for the entire week of trade week, not 3 days.
Example:
Season 2 Free Agent Week March 14 - 20.
First Offer: March 14, player signs March 17
Season 3 Free Agent Week June 13 - 19
First Offer June 13, player signs March 19 at Midnight
League Structure Changes
To correct an error I made in setting up the league structure Division #16 A.IX was dissolved and recreated as #16 R.East. This lets me balence out the promtion structure, and avoid problems like I had for the last couple days. At some point this season the Rookie Leagues will expand to 16 divisions total, Feeding to 8 A Leagues, 4 AA, 2 AA and MLB.
Eventually the plan is to expand all League Divisions to 8 Teams, 56 games and shorter season. I don't think it will happen until season 5 at the earliest. Balancing the league structure also allows for greater expansion as divisions can be added for easier growth.
Training
Long a sore spot, I hope to address the Training page this season. The plan is to make it more dynamic, adding cumulative training stats so managers know how much a player has improved, and a better representation of the players training rate.
Facebook, Twtter, Blogspot, email
More and more of our correspondence will move to social media. Discussions will move to facebook this week and suggestions and comments can be made there or Blogspot. I will relink suggestions to our public facebook page to encourage comments and feedback. User guides will be available there as well as on the site. A few weeks ago I mentioned facebook connect, that is still a plan but not this season.
Absent Managers
1/2/3/4 Rule for absentee managers.
1 week from sign-up to confirm the team, helps prevent robo sign-ups.
Login 1 time every 2 weeks to maintain the team.
After 2 weeks players stop training.
After 3 Weeks the Sim take over the team.
After 4 weeks Sim dismantles the team.
We will send emails to try and get managers back but we have to keep slots open.

Major Problem with RFA's/ Lineups/Rotation/Bullpen
I realized today that there is a problem with RFA offers. Please check your lineup/rotation/lineup.
This is how I understand the problem:
First:
The player's baseballcard would allow RFA offers even after the Deadline had passed. I fixed interface problem. However if a player received another offer after the deadline passed the interface would still allow an offer to be made. infact it would look like no offers were made at all. All transactions that were set to expire sometime March 17 may have a problem similar to the above. If a player offer expired March 18 or later the transaction should be fine.
I was working on a script to delete the any errant offers on players. However because of a series of personal commitments I haven't been able to fully test the above problems and solutions. Though I believe the impact is not wide spread. I noticed it via my offers and players, I had made a point to get the first offers out to see if any RFA problems existed.
Second:
The program that monitors all player transactions processed RFA transactions before the end of the season. I don't understand fully why that happened.
The result is that teams may have lost or gained players before the end of the season because the RFA transaction was processed prior to the end of the season. This also means rotations/bullpens and lineups are missing players because the RFA transactions were processed as if all players are new players.
It also means players will appear with a new contract in hand rather than under their old expired contract.
So even if the player was on your team and you re-signed him, the monitor program removed him from the lineup/rotation/bullpen and placed him on Non-Roster.
Please check your lineup/rotation/lineup.
What I am going to do to fix this:
I wanted to create a script to roll back the trades, however I think it will be difficult in a short time before the end of the season.
The better option is to let things play out as is. If there is a problem I'm asking managers to bring it to my attention and I'll deal with it case by case.
In the short term I am going to rewrite the trade monitoring program, or more or less modify it, so players don't get removed from their team's lineups anymore.
I will also fix the RFA interface problem and make it easier for managers to track their RFA players. I experienced some frustration trying to figure out who bid on my players, and where I stood in negotiations. This is the reason I pounded out the RFA Monitor. I also moved the link for it to the Sidebar.
If anyone has any thoughts or concerns please post on this blog.
Thanks
RG

World Series is Scheduled March 17th and 18th
#3 Texas Titans will Host #4 Oaklawn Warriors in the second Baseballczar World Series.
Texas is the defending world champion, and Oaklawn last year reached the semi-finals last year, always a tough team, this should be a good match up. Good Luck to both teams.

New Rule to Manager Logins
This is also in the Quick Start Sidebar Tutorial in Baseballczar.
1/2/3/4 Login Rule - This will start being enforced in Season 3.
Managers must log in at least 1 time every 2 weeks to maintain a team.
After 2 weeks of no manager login players quit training.
After 3 weeks the Sim takes over the team.
After 4 weeks the Sim dismantles the team.
Requiring one login every two weeks is pretty standard in sim games, unless Managers pay some sort of subscription. Baseballczar does not charge for any part of our site, thus keeping teams available to managers that want to play and be active is very important.
We will send emails out at the 2, 3 and 4 week point to remind absent managers.
In reality its not so new, but previously I had waited the entire season to siphon off absent managers. But there are a lot of new managers joining up and I need to use all the space we have effectively.
User Login Problem
There was a continuing problem where some new users would register, log out, then the next time they logged in the site would not let them in. I had coded things a little wacky which caused this problem but it is now fixed. If there are any problems please shoot me an email or post a comment on FB, or the Blog.
Please remember that I post most new info here first.
Thanks

Baseballczar Round 1 is gone, Round 2 is here.
Round 1 proved to be as exciting as I thought filled with upsets and big scores. But on to Round 2.
The playoffs from here on out run similar to the NCAA Mens BB championships 64 seeded teams placed into groups to keep things organized. Round two groups are #44 - #75. For round 3 first 16 group winners, #44 - #59 play #60 - #75. I messed up group #43 so there is none, and #45 and #44 are flipped. Check out the below example, the higher ranked team continues to have home field advantage for the 3 game series.
Remember 4 days until Free Agent week starts allowing managers to offer a contract to any RFA!
Round 3 Winner Match ups.

Playoffs start Wednesday March 9th. Please check out your team match up. Playoffs run 7 rounds ending with the BBZ World Series March 17/18. There is more detail at our blog baseballczar.blogspot.com.
Free Agent Week starting March 14 at Midnight to March 19th Midnight
There is more detail on Restricted Free Agents (RFA) in the Tutorial sidebars. But in essence you can make free agent contract offers to any player on any team that has an expiring contract, or 0 in the years column. These are RFA's. It is like MLB offseason free agency. If you want to make your team better check out the RFA list under 'GM Office > RFA'. There are no restrictions in the number of players a team can sign.
Season 3 starts March 21st.
Regular season games start March 23rd. It is sure to be an exciting new season, with more improvements and features forthcoming.

BBZ Season 2 Playoff Update!
Playoff Round 1 - Tuesday March 9th, 2011 9am
All 106 Active teams qualified for the BBZ playoffs. Log in and take a look at the rankings. Teams #1 - #22 have a first round bye. 1st round games were scheduled as of Sunday night.
To get the playoffs down to 64 teams starting in the 2nd Rd, the 1st Rd games are teams ranked 106th - 65th as visitors Vs. 64th - 23rd as home teams. In the BBZ playoffs the higher ranked team always carries the home field advantage. The first game of Season 2 Playoffs is 9am, #23 Jersey City Express AAA East vs. #106 Kingston Kavemen AAA West.
BBZ 3 and 5 game series are played out in one day as listed. Game times stagger starting at 9am, roughly teams play games 3 hours apart ie; 9a, 12a, 3a... 10a, 1p, 4p etc to give managers time to change lineups as needed.
"If necessary" games (Game 3 in a 3 game series, and Game 4/5 in a 5 Game series) will be on your team schedule whether those are played or not.
Aside from the first round all other playoff scheduling remains the same, starting at Round 2 March 10th.
If you are a new owner joining BBZ after Sunday March 6th, the new season starts March 21st. But you can still trade and sign players. All managers can also create Private Leagues to fill the game gap. PL's are free to play for all teams, so check them out they add team money and player experience.
Good luck to all teams in the playoffs.

Social Media Move
Just an update to our news feed. To make news more accessable to managers we are moving to Facebook, Twitter, and Blogspot for most of our Baseballczar communications rather than only email (which I think most people don't fully read just thinking of my own habits). Social Media is a great way to reach more users in more engaging ways, email will still be used but for personal communications, activations and confirming certain transactions such as email or password changes.
How?
Essentially I will post site news on Blogspot (its just easier than email) which will be dupicated on Facebook. I have to coordinate the Baseballczar fb page with a new page because the old one is connected to my personal FB - that should be done soon. Facebook will have all the tutorials, in addition to the tuts being on the site, but eventually site based tuts will be more tucked away than they are now . Plus I'm planning to add (?) pop ups all over the site to add immeditate guidance. Twitter will have all the updates anyone can follow and there is some baseball news feeds in there which is cool.
Discussion Forums
I feel that having a community is important. Forums encourage open feedback which I use to guide site development, and it gives managers a place to throw around ideas on how to play. I have started discussions on the Baseballczar FB page. I believe managers can also start topics, and I encourage you to do so. I will also try to have some standard forums for discussions. I still encourage direct suggestions via the site link, but posting is cool too. Just remember to use normal discourse given the public can read this stuff.
Facebook Connect
Yes. I do plan on integrating Facebook Connect into Baseballczar. There are a few things that have to happen but its in the plan going forward. Facebook Connect will add a better way for managers to connect to each other than I could do on my own. But it also adds a huge convenience factor to logging in. There is also a possibility of using Google as well, if managers ask for it I will do it. I use both FB and Google in different places personally, but I am a one man shop... just changing a light bulb has to be considered.
See you on fb, Twitter and Blogspot,

Database Error
I found an error in the player league records. The gist of the problem is Players appearing in a League Game now have two records for Season 2. Essentially when I launched the Private Leagues I left out a new column of data in player historical records. When I later added the column this created the appearance, to the Sim, that the player had no Season 2 record and created one for the player. Its not a big deal, more annoying that anything else, but I'm working on a script to combine the data and delete the extra record. Thanks RG

Recent Site work
Working on Baseballczar layouts. I am trying to get the layouts to work equally with all browsers. My appologies to any IE users. I have seen IE rendering problems on the PL standings and full league standings. I'm working through it as fast as I can. As I make adjustments it will also affect Firefox and Chrome users. Any feed back would be great. I just got a Windows machine so I can view IE properly, and its been more than eye opening. Thanks for your patience
.
Season 2 Playoffs + Trade Week
The next two weeks are important in Baseballczar. The day after the Season 2 ends playoff matchups will be announced. The format is TBA, in Baseballczar First Season we put all active teams into the playoffs. The First Baseballczar World Series Champion was the #1 Texas Titans 4 games to None over #11 Bridgeton Pacaderms. This Season 2 playoffs will probably be a similar format.
Trade Week RFA's
Week 14 is Trade Week. All players in the last year of their contact noted by a Zero (0) in the contract column are open for contract offers. There are more details in the sidebar guide RFA Signings. Please note: Players will NOT resign if their Managers do not offer a contract. Resigning is NOT automatic Managers must make an offer to resign a player. Players not offered a contract will become a UFA the next season. Also know that each team gets two 18 year old players at the start of the season.
Private Leagues
Everything is up and running. Start a league today, invite a friend to join BBZ. All the leagues are free. Check out the Private League guide in the sidebar for more details.
Player Salaries/ Bankruptcies
I few weeks ago I added money to all the accounts of each team. New teams still start at 250k. No bankruptcy plan as of now...rather no teams will be going bankrupt.
My Plan for the economy:
Some of the revenue issues will be eleviated with the release of Private Leagues because the increase in revenue is contained in the Sim which needed to be modified to accomodate the PL's. I am however sticking to the list below to help with the revenue. Also remember the O2O games (Owner to Owner) DH games generate money as well as selling players.
Note: Sim controlled teams do not generate revenue, make trades or join the playoffs. When Sim teams are turned over to a manager the bank account starts at $250k.
Thanks again,
